ADOS-2 Autism Evaluation in Katy & Richmond, TX

If your child’s screener results raised concerns — or if you’ve simply known for a while that something deserves a closer look — the ADOS-2 is one of the most trusted evaluation tools available. Fast Track ABA Center offers ADOS-2 assessments for children ages 18 months through 6 years at our Katy and Richmond, Texas, locations.

What is the ADOS-2?

early signs of autism symptoms

The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition — known as the ADOS-2 — is a structured, play-based evaluation used by trained clinicians to help assess whether a child may have autism spectrum disorder. It is widely regarded as one of the most reliable tools available for evaluating children for ASD and is commonly used alongside parent-report measures and developmental history as part of a comprehensive diagnostic process.

Unlike a questionnaire or a behavioral checklist, the ADOS-2 is conducted in person by a trained clinician who engages directly with your child through age-appropriate play activities. The clinician observes how your child communicates, plays, and interacts — and scores the session based on a standardized system.

The ADOS-2 is not a diagnosis. Results are compiled into a summary and shared with your child’s pediatrician or referring provider to support their evaluation and diagnosis decisions.

What does the ADOS-2 look at?

During the evaluation, a trained clinician observes your child across several key areas of development that are often associated with autism spectrum disorder. These include:

  • Social communication — How your child makes eye contact, shares enjoyment, and initiates or responds to interaction with others
  • Language and verbal communication — How your child talks, uses words functionally, and responds in social exchanges
  • Play and imagination — How your child engages with toys and whether they demonstrate pretend or symbolic play
  • Repetitive behaviors and restricted interests — Whether your child shows unusual movement patterns, strong fixations, or sensory-seeking behaviors

Behaviors observed during the session are scored against a standardized system to show how closely your child’s responses align with autism characteristics. That score, combined with your child’s developmental history and parent-reported concerns, gives your child’s doctor a much fuller picture.

ADOS-2 modules — how the right one is selected

The ADOS-2 is organized into five modules, each designed for a specific age group and language level. This ensures the evaluation is developmentally appropriate for every child assessed.

ModuleBest For
Toddler ModuleChildren ages 12–30 months
Module 1Children who use fewer than 5 spontaneous words
Module 2Children who use phrases but are not yet fully verbal
Module 3Verbally fluent children and younger adolescents
Module 4Verbally fluent older adolescents and adults

At Fast Track ABA Center, we use the Toddler Module and Modules 1–3 to evaluate children from 18 months through 6 years old. Your child’s clinician will determine the appropriate module based on your child’s current communication abilities and developmental stage before the evaluation begins.

What does an ADOS-2 evaluation look like at Fast Track?

Before the evaluation**

We’ll gather some background information about your child’s developmental history and your current concerns. You’re encouraged to share anything that feels relevant — you know your child best.

During the evaluation**

The ADOS-2 session typically runs between 45 and 60 minutes. Your child’s clinician will guide them through a series of structured play activities tailored to their age and communication level. These activities are designed to be engaging and low-stress for your child — they won’t feel like a clinical exam.

The clinician observes and scores your child’s responses in real time, noting how they initiate interaction, respond to social cues, use language, and engage with toys and materials.

After the evaluation**

Once scoring is complete, a results summary is sent to your child’s pediatrician or referring provider — typically within one week. Your child’s doctor will use that summary, alongside other information, to make a formal determination about whether your child meets the criteria for autism spectrum disorder.

Our team is available to help you understand what the results mean and to walk through next steps with you. If a diagnosis is made, we’ll talk with you about ABA therapy options and help you understand your insurance benefits.

ADOS-2 frequently asked questions

early intervention of autism

Does the ADOS-2 diagnose autism?

No. The ADOS-2 is a standardized evaluation tool — it does not issue a diagnosis. The results are sent to your child’s licensed physician or psychologist, who considers the ADOS-2 findings alongside a full developmental history, parent input, and other clinical observations to make a formal diagnosis.

Who conducts the ADOS-2 at Fast Track ABA Center?

The ADOS-2 is administered only by trained clinicians who meet the qualifications set by the test’s publisher. Our team receives specialized training on administration and scoring, along with ongoing clinical supervision to ensure consistent, high-quality evaluations for every family we serve.

How long does it take to get ADOS-2 results?

Results are typically compiled and sent to your child’s referring provider within one week of the evaluation. Our team will follow up with you to discuss next steps once the summary has been submitted.

Is the ADOS-2 covered by insurance?

Fast Track ABA Center offers the ADOS-2 evaluation as a no-cost service to families in our community. We also provide free insurance benefit verification to help families understand their coverage before ABA therapy services begin. Call us at (713) 425-4248 to learn more.

What happens if my child is diagnosed with autism after the ADOS-2?

A diagnosis opens the door to meaningful support. At Fast Track ABA Center, our BCBAs specialize in early intervention ABA therapy for children ages 2–6 — the highest-impact developmental window for this type of therapy. We’ll work with your family to develop an individualized therapy plan, verify your insurance benefits, and help you feel confident and informed about what comes next. You won’t be navigating this alone.

How often can a child receive an ADOS-2?

In most cases, repeated evaluations are spaced out and only recommended when earlier results were inconclusive or when new developmental questions have emerged. Your child’s clinician or pediatrician can advise on whether a re-evaluation is appropriate for your situation.

What's the difference between the ADOS-2 and the M-CHAT-R?

The M-CHAT-R is a parent-completed questionnaire you can do at home in five minutes. It’s a screener — designed to flag children who may benefit from further evaluation. The ADOS-2 is an in-person, clinician-led assessment that directly observes your child’s behavior and produces a formal summary for your child’s medical provider. They serve different purposes and can be used together as part of a broader evaluation process.
